Hermes Partnership workshop on Future Networks

May 18-19, 2011
Organized by Hermes Partnership in cooperation with University of Cantabria, Santander, spain.

Scope of the workshop:
The paradigm of the Future Internet has become a driver in terms of technology and service innovation in the framework of both wired and wireless technologies. Among others, issues related to carbon footprint, energy efficiency or machine-to-machine services have become of paramount importance in the recent years. From an architecture point of view, the impact that the Internet of Things (IoT) or cloud computing may have in the performance of existing infrastructures plays capital role in the conception of new protocols supporting the heterogeneity of devices and services foreseen in the next future. Coping with this reality, the research community is focusing on the development of innovative new solutions at various layers of the protocol stack. Some, such as digital fountain, are already part of standards. Others, such network coding, are in the experimental phase, running on top of real platforms aiming at providing practical implementations.

In this exciting framework, the Future Networks workshop addresses the aforementioned techniques and concepts and others ranging from the basis of network coding to virtualization and cloud computing. The tutorial lectures will provide new insights to the attendees. Furthermore, the atmosphere is intended to serve as the basis for brainstorming on new ideas for possible submission to the 8th Call of the 7th FP.
